Translated by Barbara F. Ichiishi

Seven Views of the Same Landscape, by acclaimed Spanish author Esther Tusquets, is a beautiful collection of coming-of-age tales that unfold in post-Civil War Barcelona. The young Sara is entranced by the glittering, sheltered world of her parents, the Catalan upper-middle class who sided with Franco in the Civil War. But she soon begins to discern the fault lines running through the larger social landscape, and to sense the hypocrisy and cruelty of her parents' inbred clan. As remembered episodes told largely from the child's perspective, the tales draw us into Sara's consciousness as she tries to fathom the mysterious world around her, in a deep and nuanced portrayal of a girls' inner life. Rendered in Tusquets' flowing musical prose, the stories offer a uniquely feminine vision of a girl's quest to find love and meaning in an alien adult world.

Praise for Esther Tusquets and Seven Views of the Same Landscape:

Esther Tusquets is one of Spain's foremost contemporary women writers, but she is worthy of fame well beyond national and gender boundaries.

– Abigail Lee Six, Times Literary Supplement

...her remarkable vignettes of a young girl's life have a universal appeal which cannot fail to strike a responsive chord in the reader.

– Sonja Karsen, World Literature Today

...if beauty in truth still holds any power in its own right, ...Tusquets' stunning body of work offers far better than a happy ending.

– Carolyn Kuebler, Rain Taxi

Esther Tusquets (b. 1936) is the author of a highly acclaimed narrative cycle (translated into English as The Same Sea as Every Summer, Love Is a Solitary Game, Stranded, and Never to Return), which caused a sensation when the books came out in the late 1970s and '80s, just after the end of the repressive Franco regime. With their daringly innovative content and prose style, the series broke new ground for the Spanish novel and for women's writing. To date she has published six novels, three story collections, four autobiographical works, and two children's books. From 1960 until her retirement in 2000, Tusquets directed the prestigious Barcelona publishing house Editorial Lumen, which promoted the freedom of intellectual and artistic expression as the country evolved from an authoritarian dictatorship into a modern democracy.

Barbara F. Ichiishi received a BA in French literature from Mount Holyoke College, a MA in Comparative Literature from the University of California, Berkeley, and a PhD in Spanish from the University of Iowa. She is the author of The Apple of Earthly Love: Female Development in Esther Tusquets' Fiction, and the translator of some of Tusquets' major works, including her novel Never to Return, her memoir Private Correspondence, and her historical memoir We Had Won the War (2012). She has published articles on Spanish and Latin American women's literature, and is co-translator of Edouar Glissant's historical drama Monsieur Toussaint.
