Translated by Sarah Pollack

This stunning collection introduces the reader to one of Latin America's most distinguished living writers, a poet whose carefully crafted verses resonate with an audience well beyond her native Uruguay. In this collection, Vitale offers the reader a diversity of beautifully lucid contemplations, ranging from the unflinching personal meditations on loss and desire, to pieces that sparkle with a playful irony and wit. This work inspires us to confront the world as it is, looking squarely in the face of human existence.

Ida Vitale was born in Montevideo in 1923. Her writing received early recognition from the Spanish Nobel laureate Juan Ramon Jimenez, and she played a prominent role in the groundbreaking "Generation of 1945," an influential group of Uruguayan artists, writers and intellectuals. When the military junta seized power in 1973, Vitale was forced to seek political asylum in Mexico City. She remained in exile there for eleven years, before moving to Austin, Texas, where she resides today.
